baked mac and cheese

Ingredients

  • 12 oz elbow noodles
  • 3 tbl butter
  • ¼ cup grated onion
  • 3 tbl flour
  • ½ tsp dry mustard
  • salt & pepper
  • 2 ½ cups whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices american cheese

Instructions

  1. preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. cook elbow macaroni in boiling, salted water
  3. melt butter and saute grated onion 1-2 minutes until soft
  4. add flour, dry mustard, salt & pepper and saute 2 minutes until golden
  5. whisk in milk, slowly to make a smooth sauce
  6. heat sauce until it boils and thickens
  7. turn off the heat and stir in the cheddar cheese until melted
  8. drain the pasta and add to the sauce
  9. pour into a buttered 9x13 inch baking dish
  10. top with slices of american cheese
  11. bake for 20 minutes until hot and bubbly
