buttermilk fried shrimp

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp oregano
  • ¼ tsp thyme
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • fresh ground pepper
  • canola oil
  • 1 ½ lbs peeled and deveined shrimp
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal

Instructions

  1. mix salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika, oregano, thyme, onion powder and pepper.
  2. toss seasoning mixture with shrimp and set aside
  3. heat canola oil in a pot to 2 inches’ deep
  4. put buttermilk in one bowl
  5. mix flour and cornmeal in another bowl
  6. dip shrimp in buttermilk and then flour
  7. fry shrimp in batches, about 4 minutes until crispy
  8. season hot shrimp with salt

Recipe Notes

make buttermilk by measuring 2 tablespoon less milk than needed and add 2 tablespoons lemon juice or white vinegar and let sit 2-3 minutes until curdled
